The painting above is called: The School of Athens (Italian: Scuola di Atene) a fresco by the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael. The fresco was painted between 1509 and 1511. Martial Arts have been a hobby of mine since I was 12. But, the above document also makes the point I had and still have a solid academic career as well.

I stayed in the university during all the years from 1973 to 1988, studying almost everything. My major was psychology, but I took most of the classes necessary for a medical degree too, like four semesters of chemistry, two semesters of Anatomy and Physiology, two semesters of Histology/Pathology, neurophysiology, physiological psychology, electron microscopy and so on.

After age 18 my father refused to give me any money. So, I also always worked, from dish washer to cook, housekeeping in a hospital, pizza maker, and working as a stone mason. I didn’t sleep much during all those years. I still don’t. Luckily university tuition was cheap back then. After getting my Bachelor’s degree I stayed at the university and did three years of research in neurophysiology guided by Professor Copeland, followed by four years of graduate school in Educational Psychology.
I generally don’t like joining things, but in the last year of Graduate School I had an internship and joined this organization. After Graduate School I became a reporter for an African American newspaper instead.

Thanks to that medical education – to this day – I still do editing for some of China’s top doctors in hospitals and universities for some part-time money. I started that medical editing helping a friend in South Korea when I lived there 2001-2009. In 2009 I moved to China. I lived there happily till October 2021 when my visa extensions ran out. My 10-year tourist visa was cancelled in March 2020 due to COVID-19. Luckily their immigration was kind and gave me extensions for a long time, but eventually those ran out.

From October 17, 2021 till now I’ve been in Thailand teaching English in rural town schools. But, I keep on with my Silk Road Kung Fu Friendship Tour wherever I go, if they have any Kung Fu training. Thais of course are justifiably proud of Muay Thai kickboxing so it isn’t easy finding Kung Fu schools sometimes.

Above: The last time I was in the US I bought a compound bow and a couple of times a week practiced archery. The photo on the left above is with a older style western bow. The second photo from the left above is from a movie set in Gansu province, China. The 3rd photo is using a Kookgung Bow, the traditional Korean martial form of archery. I trained with teams there in Jeonju and Nonsan, entered a number of competitions, and still have my own bow (in storage in Beijing). I also wrote an article about Kookgung for Taekwondo Times magazine. I posted it on the Download page of this site, as it is a form of Wushu Kung Fu also, albeit of Korean/Mongolian origin. They were great guys and ladies! The last photo is some certificates for participating in Kookgung competitions.

Below: Silk Road Kung Fu traveler doing judo in the Kukkiwon – the world headquarters of Judo! That is the dream of every judoka in the world. I didn’t do any judo during my seven years in South Korea, but there was a Judo club near my apartment in the Changping district of Beijing, and I trained with them from time to time.
Kumdo是韩国剑道 Kumdo is Korean Kendo
I was introduced to the fine art of Kendo in Korea where they have their own version called Kumdo. I first trained at the Jeonju Kumdogwan with Master Park Yong Chun – a 7th Degree black belt who won World Championship gold medals in Tokyo and Paris. My article about him was published in Kendo World – Crossing Swords and Borders, Volume 3.4, June 2007.

Above left, Hapkido. That’s like full-contact fighting in South Korea. I went to a Hapkido club for about a year. As for the Huarang story I published that in Black Belt magazine. It was in some ways a regular academic school, but they also taught all kinds of martial arts including: Hwarang-Do. Sunmudo is a Korean style of martial arts practiced in Golgulsa temple, a remarkably peaceful place where one can train in mediation, and martial arts! Back in the 1980s and 1990s I sometimes participated in “charity runs” for one good organization or another. Usually they were five or ten mile runs. I learned to enjoy the rhythm and relaxation of running and jogging. I’ve always liked swimming and bicycling too. Put them together and one gets TRIATHLON!

One day in the Changping District of Beijing I stopped at the Ming Tombs Reservoir (Shisanling Reservoir 十三陵水库) and saw something truly extraordinary! The 2011 International ITU World Championships! It was September, cold, cloudy and windy. But those champions, wearing nothing but triathlon outfits were swimming, biking and running like it was a warm sunny day. They were all in splendid physical condition and looked like super-people to me. An odd sensation came over me. All I could think was: I wanna do that!

I am a Lay Disciple at the Shaolin – that means I am a secular Buddhist (do not worship Buddha), but I study Buddhist philosophies (and all other major philosophies and religions too), and I train in Shaolin Kung Fu and many other martial arts as well.

I try to “travel light” (not carry many things), but I take this book with me. Why? Just to see how things have changed during the past 800 years in the countries I visit, as I go to many of the same places he did.

At heart I am a very simple person, a common stone, and natural man.
Writer Stone Dragon on Panshan, hiking up the Royal Road on Pan Mountain, (2014, Panshan) uphill from the North Shaolin and below the remains of the Royal Monastery. “I used to go camping up there for a few days and nights at a time with my companion. So serene – so beautiful.”
