I travel a lot. In the next week I’ll be moving twice, and might even might stay in the second location for a few months. I hear it’s nice.

Weight training is fun. I like it, and go to various gyms pretty often for swimming, the running machines, punching/kicking bags, and weights. A few years ago when I had a full time job, I was nailed down at home, and needed my own weight bench. Now, I don’t. I’ve always been a nomad, except those years I had a full time job here in China. And, that’s not possible now due to my age - I can’t get a regular work visa anymore. So, I’m selling my weights and heavy-duty professional bench. I move too often and moving weights is ridiculously expensive and time consuming. Here are some photos.

这是一个荒谬但 100% 真实的故事。这也是可悲的;太可悲了，让我发笑！

This is a ridiculous, but 100% true story. It is also pathetic; so pathetic it makes me laugh! 🤣

我想那是 2017 年底或 2018 年初。我仍然在全职教书，并认为再次做一些击剑可能会很有趣。当我还是一名大学生时，我是大学击剑队的一员。我足够优秀，有时我被要求作为其他球队的替补击剑手参加比赛。其他团队会聘请我参加一场比赛，这样他们就拥有了一支完整的团队。我不是很好，但通常都会赢。

I think it was late 2017 or early 2018. I still was teaching full-time and thought it might be fun to do some fencing again. When I was a university student I was on the university’s fencing team, and good enough that I worked as a “ringer” sometimes. What’s a ringer? Other teams would hire me for one competition so they had a complete team. I wasn’t great, but usually won.

值得注意的是，我的主要武术是武术功夫、柔道、跆拳道、空手道和跆拳道。例如，我是州青少年冠军，1973年是我高中的最后一年，也是柔道青少年奥林匹克雕像冠军。我还获得了空手道（美国）和跆拳道（韩国）的二级黑带。此外，我有剑道设备，在韩国生活了（7）年，我参加了几场比赛，并在日本接受过训练。同样，我有一把韩国弓（蒙古风格）和全套射箭装备;我也参加了韩国的比赛。

It’s worth noting my primary martial arts are Wushu Kung Fu, Judo, Taekwondo, Karate and kickboxing. For example, I was the State Junior Champion, and Statue Junior Olympic champion in Judo in 1973, my last year of high school. I also earned 2nd Degree black belts in both Karate (USA) and Taekwondo (in South Korea). In addition, I have Kendo equipment and was in several competitions during the (7) years in lived in South Korea, and also trained in Japan. Likewise I have a Korean bow (it is of Mongolian style) and full equipment for archery; which I also competed in, in South Korea.

So, fencing was just to improve my timing, center-line technique, and so on, not my main martial art. Just an add-on. Furthermore, for about 8 years I competed in mostly Olympic distance Triathlons, during the 12 years I lived in Beijing. So, again, fencing was not my main thing.

I thought I’d stay practicing and competing with epee for a few years until I mastered it, but like usual in my life, didn’t have time to move up to sabre. I like Epee. It’s more like real fighting with all parts of the body being a target.

Anyways, in 2018 I think, I signed up for a year membership at the Olympic training center near the Water Cube and other famed places here on the North Side of Beijing. That cost 20,000 Yuan, and I bought two sets of equipment, one for myself and one for a friend.

当我在那个优秀的击剑中心和其他人一起击剑时，有几个人问我从哪里学来的“风格”。我说：早在 1970 年代在我的大学里。“啊，”他们总是回答说：“它看起来确实像一种老式的风格！我猜是恐龙风格，与现在使用的最新技术相比。While I was fencing with others at that excellent Fencing center, several people asked me where I learned my “style.” I said: back in the 1970s at my university. “Ah,” they always answered: “It does look like an old fashioned style!” A dinosaur style I guess, compared to the newest techniques used these days.

I also noticed that my epee blades were very stiff. Very stiff, and the best epee fencers had very flexible blades that could bend around mine, and score. So, I had to get one of those. Someone told me another Epee was more flexible, so I bought that. But, it wasn’t much better. Finally one guy told me the exact make, model and manufacturer of the blade he was using. It had a flexibility almost like a whip. GREAT! So I ordered one. It cost a little more than 1,000 Yuan, just for the blade, but I knew it would make a huge difference in my ability to score.

然后，就在我在邮政邮件中收到那把新的超级刀片两天后……Then, only two days after I received that new super-blade in the mail…

我在工作中收到一条消息，说老师有新的职责，每周有两个晚上必须在学校。那是重剑之夜！哦，不，噢噢噢是的。

I got a message at work that teachers had new responsibilities and two nights a week were required to be at school. Those were the Epee nights! Oh NOOOooooooOOOO! Yes.

周六早上也有自由练习，但这是一个小团体，重剑击剑手总是互相击剑。我和他们竞争不大，所以大多数时候我只是坐在那里，等着他们中的一个可怜我，然后围起来一会儿。

There was also free practice on Saturday mornings, but it was a small group, and the Epee fencers always fenced each other. I wasn’t much competition for them, so mostly I just sat around waiting for one of them to take pity on me and fence for a while.

The fact is, I never put my new whip-like blade on a hilt, and never even tried it. It was stored for four years in the same mailing package I received it.
