January 6, 2024 just before my speed trip to HK, I was very fortunate to meet and get to know Master Wang Kai (王凯师傅), founder and director of Beijing Jingwu Zhuangyuan Cultural Media Co., Ltd (北京京武状元文化传媒有 – ＠京武状元 – @Jingwu Champion) in the Changping District of Beijing. (How did that happen? I was flipping through Douyin – Chinese TikTok videos and saw a particularly exciting Kung Fu performance – found out who did it, called, found Teacher Wang, called, made an appointment. That’s called: “taking the initiative,” and/or a proactive approach to learning about any and every world outside of our own. He very kindly gave my friend Henry and I a tour of one of his three Wushu schools – and then we had a fabulous lunch.

My series of articles titled Rebuilding the North Shaolin should expand with the latest installment (Part 18) sometime soon. During the past three months I visited several times and even stayed at the North Shaolin Monastery for varying lengths of time. For the past few weeks I’ve been making finishing edits on that article – an article that might become two articles because – I have this unerring habit of going over the word-count limits by rather extravagant numbers. I can only thank my lucky stars and Kung Fu Magazine Editor Gene Ching’s great patience with me. Thank you kind Sir!

The “Rogue Tower” – the only stone survivor of the wars here at North Shaolin Monastery. With my nickname of Stone Dragon, naturally I have great empathy for this great surviving tower. The series of articles I wrote on the reconstruction process started in 2010, and the heavy construction is about 85% -90% complete. However the interior finishing work in primarily the Monks sleeping quarters has yet to begin. Some 4.5 million Chinese Yuan is needed to begin that work this spring, and donations are needed. Since COVID-19 funding for the Shaolin Monastery have dried up. It’s a beauty of a monastery, and they should be entering the “home stretch” now, but contributions are urgently needed. From as early as about 700,000 years ago, ancient humans lived in the Beijing area. Dated to 3,000 years ago, Yan and Ji in this area became feudal states in the first years of the Zhou dynasty. Since the Qin unification in 221 BCE, Beijing emerged to be a key garrison city in North China against incursions from the borders. During the period of the northern dynasties Liao and Jin, Beijing evolved as one of their capitals, the political center of northern China. The Mongols made Beijing for the first time in its history the imperial capital of the whole China. In the time of Ming and Qing periods, Beijing was still the core of the State power of China. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 Beijing started offering great potential for rejuvenation. (Little known history from a sign in the Capital Museum.)
